Being in India, we have often heard our elders talk about Vastu and seen them examine properties for Vastu compliance. But some of us wonder what is Vastu? Why is it so significant?
Vastu or Vastu Shastra in Sanskrit means the "science of architecture". It is a traditional Indian system of architecture that includes the principles of design, spacial geometry, dimension quantification, space utilization, and layout. The purpose of Vastu is to integrate the architecture of the space, with nature, the structure, and ancient beliefs utilizing geometric patterns, symmetry, and alignments.
The usage of Vastu is seen to be extensively practiced in South India.
Vastu Shastra is the textual part of Vastu Vidya - the broader knowledge about architecture and design theories from ancient India.
Vastu Vidya is a collection of ideas and concepts, which are models for the organization of space and form within a building.
Imagine this, you see a beautiful temple on top of a hill. There seem to be a lot of people going up the hill, so you think "it must be a famous temple". As you reach the top, an expansive view of the city holds your breath. You see that the city is so beautiful, with a mix of green and grey, looking at it from here makes your problems look so little. Now, you walk into the temple, and as soon as you enter, the beautifully crafted pillars and an intricately designed symmetrical dome catch your attention, and you think "who would`ve built this beautiful masterpiece". This thought is then disrupted by the bells tolling and the aarti begins. You say our prayers and sit down on the cool marble floor of the temple. The atmosphere feels lighter and a constant light breeze blows through the inner walls of this rich space. We feel a sense of positivity, calmness, and a state of peace. Sounds familiar?
Why do you think we always feel this sense of positivity in a temple?
This feeling of peace and positivity is the significance of Vastu and we see that a temple is a perfect example of a well-designed Vastu-compliant space. The true purpose of Vastu is to design a space that makes you feel peaceful and calm. Almost all temples in India are designed by considering the Vastu principles of design.
Unfortunately, today we see that some of the consultants are fueled by greed, market Pseudoscience and superstition in the name of Vastu. Which in turn has made us individuals lose trust in Vastu Shastras.
Vastu Shastra or the ancient Indian science of architecture, when used veraciously with the genuine practitioner, can help you build a space that is efficient, peaceful, and calm. A space where it would be a delight to spend your time in. A space where you can feel lighter and positive.
Would you think about Vastu the next time you want to design your home?
